What this walk was about.

This episode exists because Claude went down.

I had a stack of sessions running, the service threw errors across every model, and I switched to my backup and kept working. Which is the whole episode: two is one and one is none. If one thing is critical and you only have one of it, you have none.

Gringo One

It starts with airplanes, because airplanes are the best example of the idea anybody has ever built. Redundant hydraulics, redundant electrical, redundant everything. That turns into being taken up in a Cessna at twelve, a Katana with a stick instead of a yoke, and a thought experiment I have clearly run before: both pilots go down, and I am the one who has to land it.

The point is not that I could land an A380.

I know enough about the thing so that if there was an expert in my ear telling me how to do the things, I’d be able to follow instructions and land the plane.

That is a real level of competence and it is the one worth having in almost everything: enough proficiency to be dangerous, and enough sense to keep listening.

Redundancy for people who are not running an airline

Multi-region failover, why AWS going down takes your calorie app with it, owning your own DNS, and the thing I worked out live on the recording, which is that I am something like a data libertarian. I had not said that out loud before and I am still testing it.

Then backups for people with no IT department, the 3-2-1 rule, and the question every small business should be able to answer: if the person who built it were unreachable tomorrow, does the business stop?

The credo, and the citation I got wrong

About half an hour of me building an academy credo out of GI Joe, Reading Rainbow, the Scout Law, and one line I chase all the way to IMDB.

I refuse to hand that line to Walt Whitman, which was right. Then I credit the wrong writers from the wrong episode, and I stop one step short of where it actually came from. That correction is logged below and it is the most useful thing in this post.

Claude’s having a service outage. Elevated errors for multiple models. I wonder if like how many people in the world are like, I can’t work, my brain’s shut off. Luckily, I have a redundancy. There’s the saying in the military. I’m trying to remember who said it. May have been Jocko. Definitely a military term. Two is one and one is none.

Two is one and one is none. I don’t know where I heard it. It’s a military thing. I’m not a military person. I didn’t was never served, but I have a lot of friends that did and great respect for them. But I love the idea of redundancies. So you never want to have, you know, a critical point of failure and not have a backup. And so airplanes are awesome examples.

They’ve got redundant systems for hydraulic controls. we’re about to explore Spencer’s fascination with aviation. I’m a huge fan of aviation. When I was a little kid, I wanted to be a fighter pilot. And I was super into airplanes. And when I was turned 12, my parents surprised me, and they one of the guys that went to our church.

was a pilot and then we met him. We went and got donuts at Winchell’s. It’s my favorite place to get donuts. And then we drove down to near Provo Lake. Near Utah Lake in Provo? Near a lake. There’s a lake out right by Provo. And there’s an airport right there. And we met them and it was a surprise and we got to go up in a little Cessna. And I got to sit in the first officer’s seat. So I was on the right side.

And the pilot was on the left. I think his name was Wayne. But

remember, it was a long time ago. anyway, I love aviation. We did went up and flew around and I we moved to Arizona. we my dad met one someone in our church and he was a he was a used to be an Air Force pilot, so he’s a pilot, had his license and he got he arranged to have them take me up and my dad al it was and my parents were always really cool about supporting whatever you us kids were really, you know, into, especially when it came to maybe the thing we wanted to do someday. So

I was very lucky. They they they f found opportunities to help us learn. And I got to go up in an airplane and there’s this little katana. It’s a low-wing and there’s a two-seater, very nimble, very light, and and it’s just they have a stick, kinda like a fighter jet. So it’s not a yoke, which is like the Cessna has this two handles and you push and pull to go up and down and then you rotate to roll left and right.

The katana actually has a stick, so it feels like more like a fighter plane. And anyway, redundancy.

Done a lot of simulator work too. I could I could probably land a plane if I had to. Like I can take off for sure. And then I could probably land it and survive the landing. I’m not saying I could land it and just like walk away. You know, we’d get to the ground, you know. I don’t know if like the bigger the plane, the harder it is. Cessna’s and stuff are pretty basic, simple. my stepdad’s a pilot for one of the major airlines.

He does international flight and he flies the

He flies the Airbus A380, I think. Tell me if I’m wrong, sorry about that. It’s massive. These planes are gigantic. I wrote I think I took an Airbus down to Peru from LAX. It has two aisles, so there’s three rows of seats. You know, there’s the seats by the window, and then there may have been two. No, there was more. Yeah, there no, there were. I’m trying to remember. It was a big plane. Two aisles.

Three s three sets of seats. The plane going down to Peru was a Latam Airlines. So I I bought a t a Delta airline ticket, but then the I flew Delta from Phoenix to LA. And then at LAX I flew from a Latam airline from Los Angeles to Lima. Anyway, this Latam air flight, it looked the wing was just taped up. It looked like it had duct tape all over all across the wing.

A bunch of my friends that are pilots, because I posted a picture of that, they commented and they said, Wow, I’ve never seen that much speed tape. Apparently it’s called speed tape because it helps the wing, because the wind or the air going across the wing has to needs a nice smooth surface. So maybe there was some, you know, damage to that part of the wing, or just it was probably just cosmetic or it was causing some sort of drag. So they’ve taped it over to make sure it was smooth. This p this wings had tons of it.

And I was near the wing on the right side of the s the aircraft. So I was on the I was on the starboard side. Do they call it port and starboard on an aircra in an airplane? I don’t know if they do. So port is left. I remember that because it’s got four letters. Port and left are the same length. So port is left. Facing the forward forward, you know, the forward part of the plane, the nose. On the right is starboard.

And then you’ve got the aft, which is the back of the plane. Forward, aft, port, starboard. I was on the starboard side, window seat, looking at the wing. And then while we were flying, I could see the wall kind of like the fuselage was kind of like moving, because the wings were the whole plane was, you know, t catching turbulence and like it was it was it was incre it was a big plane. My my so my stepdad flies those. Those I don’t know if I could land.

They’re so big. And there’s so much to it. I mean, I mean, well, let me just do a thought exercise, and all my pilot friends can give me shit when I say this. So if there was an emergency, and I thought thought through this, you know, like if there was an emergency, and then the pilots are both like they they both eat a bad taco or burrito, and then they’re they’re they pass out and they’re unconscious from this bad burrito.

And they’re calling out to the plane. Can anyone fly a plane? And no one answers. And I’m like sitting there and I’m like, Man, I’ve done a lot of flight sims. You know, I would probably step up and say, Yes, let me give it a shot. Just if there’s no one else, if there’s no one qualified. I actually have flown a plane, a little one. I have done touch and goes. Under you know, I mostly it was just I was, you know, not by myself flying, so like I had the the the pilot there. But we did touch and goes.

And there’s this really cool part when you’re about to land, and especially in Arizona because that’s so hot, that there’s heat coming up off of the con the pavement. And you have to gently come down at the right angle of attack. And then you have to get this airspeed at the right place so that it’s slowing and your flaps are down, which are helping you stay stable and fly slower so you can come down on approach. And so

You have to let you can’t force the nose down to get through this kind of air that’s coming up. You have to just like f you hit it, it feels like you’re you’re falling you’re putt like you feels like your plane sit little plane is like kind of on a cushion. And then as the air speed drops, you know, you’re you sink on you sink through it and you have to keep the nose up so that the there’s three wheels. So the rear wheels touch down first. And you sink through and you touch down and it’s a very it’s a really cool feeling.

Especially when you’re actually hand is on the stick. So this little katana, this is what I remember feeling. And then you would touch down and then you would throttle up. You know highway to the danger zone, you know. Top gun style. You throttle back up and then you take off again. So it’s a touch and go. And people do this when they’re learning how to f land and take off and stuff. And then talk to the radio guys. Okay, so back to this back to the mind exercise.

So I’m on a plane and the a pr and the the both pilots have eaten the bad burrito and they’re just they’re incapacitated. They’ll be fine. They just need medical attention. But we’re they’re not gonna be okay and we need someone to help land the plane and no one else is like everyone else is just like deer and headlights and there’s me and I’m sitting there and I’m just like, man, I’m not even in the I’m not even in the the row where you have to help people, you know? I’m not even in that row.

And I’m like, you know, I’ve done a lot of sims. So they’re I’m like, okay, I’ll give it a shot.

And I I go up there and I probably would sit in the right side because that’s where I the only place I really know. So I’m gonna sit in the first officer’s seat. And Captain’s probably there, you know, passed out and people are helping him. So I’m like, all right, hands on the thro on the yoke. And the Airbus actually has Airbuses have a a a joystick. Yeah. They’re like super scientific. I don’t know, I don’t Boeing has a I think they still have the yoke.

But the Airbus, the new ones have a joystick. So it’s kind of like a it’s pretty cool. So I hand on the so let’s pretend we’re on the Latam airline and I’m A380 massive airplane. So the hard part would be figuring out how to get to the runway, because like I have no idea how to navigate this thing. So I’d probably get on the head head, I’d probably get on. They have autopilot too, and a bunch of things. So most likely autopilot’s on.

Put on the headset and start communicating with whoever’s there. And it’s Latam Airlines, South America. I’m flying to Peru. So most likely, hopefully they speak English. And they’re like, Gringo. We’re at Pia Lima, Lima Airport. Gringo, Gringo, are you there? And I would be like, Yes, yes, I’m here. I got it. And they’d be like, All right, all right, Gringo, we’re gonna guide you in. And then they, you know, there’d be an emergency, so then they clear the runways, re-redirect all the traffic into Lima Airport.

And I would be like, all right, I’m doing this. And so, you know, most likely they would help guide me to at least try to get to in alignment with the airline with the with the if we were over the ocean, or you know, it would it would be really hard because I think autopilot would help get us there. They could probably do a lot of remote stuff. They might the newer planes, they may even be able to land them remotely. I don’t even know. They’re really cool. But let’s just say for this mind experiment.

that I’m I can see the runway. So let’s take the whole navigation part out of the equation because that’s getting the getting the getting the airspeed and the angle the the descent and the angle correct to bring the plane down so that it comes into contact with the runway at the right speed and then also be able to throttle back. One of the hardest things is I wouldn’t I don’t know how to throw on the so when you when you land

And the plane touches down, there’s something that they have to do to thrott to change the the there’s things on the engine that cover, they actually block the engine exhaust to make it reverse thrust so that it slows the plane down. It’s kind of like an air brake. And so that’s where you hear this like the crazy engine noises. And you’ll if you look at if you’re ever in a plane and you’re landing and you can see the back of the engine, so maybe if you’re flying on a smaller 737 or something.

And you get a chance to watch it. I love watching it when we land because you can see you can see these things extend to redirect thrust coming out of the engine so that it’ll slow the plane down. because there’s really the wheels aren’t gonna stop the plane. There’s no brakes. They they do have brakes, but they’re not meant for like high speed stopping. So the plane touches down. So this would be the hardest thing is like I don’t know A, I don’t think I’d bring it in at the right angle.

B, I don’t know if I’d get at the right speed. They probably could tell me, you know. nose up, nose down, throttle up, throttle down. They may be able to do a lot of this remotely, I don’t know. But like depending on how advanced the airline the plane is. but let’s just say I’m like a the seven three sevens were first released in like the sixties. Boeing seven three seven.

They have a new one, the Max, and all these things. original release. What did it? Boeing 737 was originally launched in 1964. Wow. This planes had been around. So they got newer or newer ones, obviously. 1968. So the 737-200, I want to find the full full list. Google’s gonna hook me up here.

So the 737-100 was first released in 68, and then they had a 200 that came out in 67. The 200 advanced was in 71. This plane’s been around forever. But I don’t know if it had like advanced autopilot and things, remote flying capabilities. But the s the 737 would probably be easier than the A380, because the A380 is massive. It’s bigger than a 747.

eight let’s look A380 bigger than 747. Let’s see if there’s a size difference. Yes, Airbus A380 is bigger than the Boeing 747 in passenger capacity, floor space, wingspan, height, and overall weight. And the 747, if you know, is like the one that they had Air Force One with the big, it looks like it has a big thing in the front. It’s front, it’s got two two story front. It’s a big plane.

So wingspan is 79.8 meters, 261 feet. Compared to the 747 is 68.4 meters by 224 feet. Lengthwise they’re the A380 is n shorter. Wow. But it’s big. And so anyway.

Trying to bring it down at the right speed. I don’t know how to extend the flaps. Like that would be hard. They’d probably be trying to tell me this. You know, okay, look to your right, there’s a switch. Take it down to half half flaps. Flaps are meant to help the wing change shape. So flaps, and then.

Throttle, throttle down, slow the plane down,

then align the angle with the runway and try to kind of bring it in gently and then they have this thing called flaring at the end where you’re coming down and you have to pull back to flare the front of the plane up. my stepdad’s got a funny story about this but I’m not gonna tell it. But you flare and then the rear wheels touch down and then this starts to slow down and then the front wheel touches down and then you there’s that somehow throttle you know reversal on the engines that you have to fire. So it’ll slow down enough.

Most likely they’re gonna have the everything ready. Like they’re gonna have fire department out there. They’re gonna sometimes they put foam on runways so that when planes come down too rough or the landing gear hasn’t extended and they hit, the sparks don’t catch to ignite the fuel. So they might have that already. It might be a foam party when we get there. But I feel like I feel like I I know enough about aviation to at least like take direction. So there’s a there’s a there’s a life lesson in this.

You know, like I know enough about the thing so that if there was an expert in the my ear telling me how to do the things, I’d be able to follow instructions and land the plane and maybe s maybe save everyone. That’s kind of an interesting connection to like what work we’re doing. So getting enough proficiency so that you can be dangerous. I could be like I could be like Maverick. you’re dangerous. You’re dangerous. Iceman.

Like Val Kilmer is so good in that movie. I like Val Kilmer a lot. It’s an interesting documentary about him. He’s a very interesting person. A very weird role for him. I don’t think he didn’t r I don’t think he wanted to do that role, but

Anyway, so I’m Maverick. I’m dangerous enough to land a plane by direction. And I can listen to the control tower. Gringo one. Gringo one Lima Airport. Lima Lima Airport to Gringo One. Do you do you read me? I’m be yes, I read you. I’m at the controls. Pilots pilots are incapacitated due to bad burrito ingestion. How can I help you? I’m here. Let’s do this.

Or like there’s you know, setting down in the field. You know, there’s a lot of different protocols and things. The anyway how do we got onto this because Claude shut off and now I had to switch over to my redundant backup system, which is codex. So I’m still doing work here.

But I’m waiting for Fable well I I burned through my Fable five point one ultra code, like burned through my whole week in like half a day. So anyway, I’m out I’m in timeout for that. I’ll have to switch to my other account.

So I’m gonna fire up my redundant backup so I’m not stuck doing things, and I have another redundant backup which runs off so if if if Claude went down and if OpenAI was offline too, my third redundant backup would be the AI or Cloudflare AI gateway. And I’m using some models there, which runs on Cloudflare infra. So I love this idea of multi-region failover.

So we d you know, most most of the time when you’re deploying an application, you need to think about downtime. Like if a data center goes offline. There was recently an outage that happened because a Phoenix data center here where near why where I live, the storms caused issues and the cooling systems went offline. And so data centers are very hot. The machines and the especially like GPUs are super hot.

And so

They they had to take the data center offline, otherwise all the CPUs and things would burn up. And so they took it offline and it was it was driving some critical infrastructure. Name name or yeah, name cheap, d the the domain registrar, and then a bunch of other things caused some like crippled some big services. You we commonly hear about AI downtime and then c Cloudflare is another big one. But these these these

These applications running in the cloud, they operate in data centers. And so they’ll data centers have regions around the world. And so you’re not gonna just like install your app in one data center because if it’s in that one in Phoenix and the power goes off and then the cooling systems can’t keep the servers running, they have to shut it down. Otherwise, everything blows up. And so if you have your app deployed to one region.

And it goes offline and all your customers are mad at you. And you’re now everyone that’s now that everyone that’s s addicted to Claude and can’t think for themselves is now unable to function. You know. At least I have can switch over to my backups of back and my my redundancy. So I’m not crippled. I can still do my work. I I’m using AI to write all my code at this point. So, you know, I could I could break out the Visual Studio code, start start ru writing some bespoke code.

You know, but at the rate at which I’m building things now, it would be like, Well, I guess I’m gonna you know, the timeline I gave you that’s actually gonna take me like six months now. Where I gotta s go out and find a d a dev team of like thirty engineers. So anyway.

Redundancies of systems. And I feel like in life it’s important. So planes have redundant systems. So going back to Gringo One coming into Lima Airport, they have redundant systems for hydraulic controls. They have redundant systems for the electrical systems. So if one fails, they switch to backup or auto fails, does auto fail over? And there’s an idea too with cloud applications where

If a region goes offline, there’s there’s these internet kind of s imagine a switchboard, you know, and it’s routing calls and stuff, all old timey. It’s like that, where the traffic goes, you type in the website, and then it’s like, where’s the server? Normally it routes it to the place close to you so it’s fast, but like if it’s if that server’s that whole that whole place is offline, they’ll send it somewhere else. So it’s a backup, it’s a failover. But then not only do you have data centers, you have

Infrastructure providers. So you have like Azure, which is Microsoft. You have Amazon has AWS, Amazon Web Services, and then you have Google, Google Cloud Platform. And then I don’t think Apple really does this. They have their own infrastructure though. So imagine if you are with Google and you have all your stuff running in Google’s cloud platform, and then Google has this massive issue. There’s AWSs have been having issues.

And I was reading some articles about this. About and I I think they’re it’s kind of conjecture, I think, but it’s they’re they’re thinking that because they’re they’ve scaled back on actual talent, people, human knowledge, they’re they’re running into issues because there’s things that are happening that are getting rolled out where maybe a human would have had said, Hey, don’t do that. And they’ve had some configuration issues that caused some massive out outages in AWS, and that caused AWS goes down.

And then everyone running their stuff on AWS goes offline. So for example, I use a app called Chronometer.

And chronometer is a tracking app for

You know, I put my calories in, I log my food, and it tells me like my am I in a deficit or whatever. It’s really nice. I I recommend it. But they run, I think they run on Firebase, actually, which is Google. And then Google’s Firebase maybe going offline and it takes their app offline. So then they have to send out an email, usually blaming it on the provider or whatever. we’ve been lucky with some of my clients to we’ve been using different platforms and they haven’t been.

susceptible to some of these bigger issues. we were, you know, we dodged a big one because we’re not we were not I don’t I’m not a huge AWS fan.

I’m not a big fan of any of the big ones. I’d rather use a a scrappy little guy like DigitalOcean, which is really big. But I’d rather build my own multi-region failover system using DigitalOcean. I I had this thought, and this is super super paranoid. But now what what if you built a multi-region, multi-provider failover system? So it’s like you have

your own DNS, which is like the mailbox routing system for internet traffic. It’s the thing that you type in like Google.com, you know. And Google.com is just a word. It’s just text, you know. And your browser has to say like, where does this go? You know, if if the user wants this Google, where does it go? So it r they have these servers in the world and they are called DNS servers. And DNS stands for domain name service. And there are a bunch of servers that

They take a request, so my my internet service provider, which is I’m not gonna name it because I don’t wanna dox all my infra. But my internet service provider then takes that request and then they’re like, where’s my name service? And then they look at the domain name and they’re like, all right, well this this domain name is registered and it’s through go GoDaddy or whatever, and then its name servers are listed as this. So then it routes it to that and it’s this way, it’s kinda like a way of routing your request, and it happens really fast.

But you know, it’s I lost my train of thought there. But I was thinking about having my own DNS that’s in multiple regions. So I have you know my domain name provider, and then I have like three different DNS servers, they’re all in different regions, I own them. A multi-region mul you know, multi-region DNS system. Now you have multi-region deployments of servers so that if an entire region goes offline like big whoop. But this is the other part of the whole thing, right? So my machine that I’m coding on, I like to experiment with things, so I don’t keep anything critical on it. You know, it it needs to be

Ephemeral, which is a term used like it means it could disappear at any time. Ephemeral means lasting for a very short time. So my computer’s not lasting for a very short time, but it needs to I need to act as if the stuff on this it wouldn’t be a big deal if if I it got nuked or it there was a something got breached. Like, you know, I’m not keeping I keep all of my stuff.

I keep all my secrets and authentication locked up pretty tightly and it’s all biometric controlled. So if something happened, the only place it could really get it from is memory. If I had something running and it had a secret, but I’m not gonna run production secrets on this machine, you know. Production secrets run in production. So I’m gonna have dev secrets. So I might have like a send grid API token that’s locked down and limited and it’s used for development.

And that might be and that’s fine, I can get that, I can kill that token no no problem. You know, so these are things that I think are gonna get worse and worse. If you’re gonna a run a really good example of a redundant system that you really should consider if you’re the first thing you’re looking for is if you have a lot of critical data, like people that have videos and it’s like a ton of data, cloud is a good place for that. But like if you have if you have sensitive documents that you don’t want to just keep in the cloud because the cloud has its own security risks, like Apple gets breached all the time and so.

You could put it on a hard drive, but then you know hard drives can fail. So if you put a terabyte worth of your documents and say baby photos and stuff, and then you plug it in one day and it doesn’t work, like that’s bad. You don’t have a redundant backup there. So there are these things called NAS systems, na network attached storage, NAS. I’m not gonna recommend any pr any actual

things because I don’t have any direct I’ve haven’t used a NAS in a long time. I actually built this thing called an unraid server. A DN don’t go do that. It’s a little bit more advanced, it runs Linux. It’s pretty cool. But that thing actually like the USB drive running Linux that had all the configuration so it knows how the drives are all put together. I I hit it and it cracked in half.

So there’s a way to restore it, but I have this server that’s bricked with like five or six hard drives. So what I’ll be able to figure it out. That’s actually probably a really good project for Claude right now. I should get him on that because there’s a way to like build a new image and then boot it up and then analyze the drives and then stitch them together in the right order so that the NAS will come back online. and I need to do that. Backblaze is a really good sort service. Backblaze, my brother-in-law recommended. I don’t know if this I haven’t used them in several years. But it’s just a backup. It’s very low level. And it so this is kind of cool. They have a hybrid NAS. So network attached storage. So in your in your in your infrastructure with a B2 cloud storage. And these guys are super cheap because you’re just basically loading up in data in like a

They call it like long-term storage, where if it’s infrequently accessed, they can store it really cheap. Like the cloud storage you need to get your website pictures and stuff to pull from needs to be very fast, so they have to keep it active. And but if they can just put it on a hard drive somewhere and it’s you know, they call it cold storage, where there’s like data you need, but you’re not gonna use it much. And it’s like if you have a ton of data, this is a good thing to look into. What’s their pricing?

Backblaze, I used to use these guys. They are $7 per terabyte per month. That’s pretty good. What is their overdrive offering? They have two offerings: Backblaze B2, and they have a Backblaze B2 overdrive built on the Backblaze B2. Wow. Terabyte, terabit speed. Wow. At exabyte scale. Those are big numbers. Throwing up out some big numbers there. Size matters with these guys.

there’s a protocol called S3, which is something that Amazon created and it’s a way to kind of like put data and s into c into buckets. You know, it’s telling a story visually is very hard, especially if you want to it to look very professional and also this AIs are designing things that are very AI, like it’s you can tell, like you’re f starting to see some color choices and you’re like, this is an AI site. Okay, I I feel it. I feel it in its bones. But then when you work with a UIUX Pro and then you have very specific you need to have an established brand theme, brand kit.

that lays out content standards and fonts and all of these things that help, you know, to is you know, establish the look and feel. You have your, you know, look and feel and brand kit and stuff so that and I’ve just noticed one thing that I don’t like. Well that’s actually okay on mobile. One of the so then there’s responsive development and design where

You have to look at it on a small screen, and then you have to look at it on a big screen, and then it’s like the there’s a lot to it. I’m seeing the background clip on the handheld view. And most people that see this will probably be on their phone. They’ll probably be, you know, chilling on the couch, watching Netflix or something. No judgy if that’s what you’re doing right now. And I am pulling things up, so it’s I do some screen recording, but I feel like having visuals, you know. anyone that’s done psychedelic work understands how important the visuals are.

So yeah, but I’m trying to paint the picture to help understand the metaphor between the a div a computer and the human system, because that’s where I’m drawing these parallels. And I feel like this is a good thought experiment to help talk through some complicated things because we all understand these w everyone understands how their phone works. You know, it’s like the phone’s got a battery and then you have to charge it, and it’s like we need to get rest.

You know, to like pretend that I have to give my site to an agency like the marketing store, who is in charge of like Monopoly and for McDonald’s and they did their big let’s look at the marketing store, TMS.

They do TMS global technology marketing. Big boys. These are the big boys. They work in the big sandbox.

So I wanna, you know, there’s McN Monopolies on their front page. Some of the work that I did for Monopolies, like literally on their homepage. They did the creative. I built the interactive piece. So I’m not saying I made it all, you know. It was part of a team that did it.

T Mobile. So they were yeah, T Mobile Tuesday. So like our company was involved with that. I was on a different team. that was a very talented group of of individuals that got that pro that whole program up and running. Had some very unique had some unique technology kind of thing requirements, you know, more being that it came out every week and there was just this

you know, traffic hammering and there’s just they needed it to be dynamic and there’s a lot of like markets and things that they had to support and yeah, it’s cool. The team was really smart. You know, they had really good then they ran into things with infrastructure and they had to, you know, engage their external support teams, the provider, and really work to

And s to s you know help kind of they had to reach out to the their the company that they were, you know, hosting these platforms with to get through some difficult architecture decisions.

They didn’t just like think they knew everything. They relied on the experts. You know, they leaned on the people that built that technology, you know.

Correction log

  • The Ted Lasso citation (53:16 to 58:03). This is the one that stings, because this is the episode about getting citations right. What I got right: Walt Whitman never said it. A Whitman scholar at the Walt Whitman Archive has confirmed to Snopes that the line is not his, and refusing that attribution was the right call. What I got wrong: the episode. The darts scene where Ted quotes Whitman is Season 1 Episode 8, The Diamond Dogs, written by Leann Bowen. I said episode 10, The Hope That Kills You. I even said on air that I had Googled the wrong one, and then kept it, so the writers I credited are from the wrong episode. And what I stopped short of: I asked exactly the right question, that the writers had to get it from somewhere, and then stopped at the writers. They are not the origin either. The earliest known instance of the phrasing is a syndicated advice column from 1986 by Marguerite and Marshall Shearer, and the sentiment runs back to at least the 1970s. The true author is unknown. The lesson is the one the episode was already about, aimed at me: I stopped one step early, at the answer a machine handed me.
